The battle is won through PRAYER

There is something so powerful and profound about people coming together in prayer. Now, I am not talking about a half-said, don’t really care,  or a just “spit out the words”, but one where everyone is so focused on having a heart-to-heart with the Lord that all their cares disappear.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – 1 Thessalonians 16-18

There are so many different types of prayers; one for everyone! There is always the traditional “Dear God…”, then there is prayer by song (worship), prayer by art, and so on. To pray is to talk to God and be honest. I think the most genuine talks with God are the effortless ones.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states in paragraph 2559 “Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God.” But when we pray, do we speak from the height of our pride and will, or “out of the depths” of a humble and contrite heart? He who humbles himself will be exalted; humility is the foundation of prayer, only when we humbly acknowledge that “we do not know how to pray as we ought,” are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer.” The definition of prayer is: A solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God. Is that what we are doing when we pray?

Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. – Romans 12:12

This leads me to the next thing, the four types of prayer// Petition. Adoration. Contrition. Thanksgiving //

Petition– Everyone always has a list of things to pray for. Maybe it’s your grandma, a friends grandma, or a friend of a friends grandma, there is always something or someone in our life that needs prayer and you know what? God wants to hear them!

And this is the boldness we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. –  1 John 5:14

Adoration– How great is our God?! Hey, I know how amazing He is but let Him know! Acts 20:24 says, “But I do not count my life of any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God’s grace.” Think about that for a second- ‘but I do not count my life as any value to myself’. WOW. Don’t tell God who you are, tell God who He is.

Contrition– Sin eats us. Although nothing can truly separate us from God’s love, it does create a barrier and eats away at us spiritually. When we sin we are living in this world, ignoring the world to come (heaven) and making ourselves property of Satan. God loves you too much to leave you where you are, so ask Jesus to heal the roots of your sin and the grace to sin no more.

Thanksgiving– Oh, how important it is to thank God for everything!! Thank God for the good, for the bad, and for the things he has not even given you. One thing I personally find myself praying a lot is how thankful I am that God gave me the gift of himself. Not just upon the cross, but how he has placed a fire inside me to love others freely and selflessly as he did.

Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. – Jeremiah 29:12

Some tips:

  • 1.) Set up a schedule of specific prayer requests for every day of the week.
  • 2.) Have an alarm go off on your phone a few times a day as a reminder to take a moment and pray throughout the day.
  • 3.) Immerse your self in God’s word; for the bible is one big prayer!
  • 4.) Treat God as your best friend & tell him EVERYTHING

I am a firm believer that people pray in times of happiness, not just times of sorrow. People who feel true joy often thank God without even knowing it! With a joyful heart you are thanking the Lord for this life he has given you and the triumphs you have experienced.  The best part about any prayer that is said or unsaid is that He hears, feels, accepts, and rejoices in every word in any prayer.

Some may say they are ‘bad’ at praying, but one wise missionary once told me that, “there is no such thing as a bad prayer” and you know what, she’s right! God doesn’t care how insightful, long or great a prayer is because in all truth, He just wants to hear from you. God desires an authentic relationship and he deserves it, so by golly lets give it to him through prayer!
